Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic therapy, is a dental procedure used to treat infection or damage inside a tooth.

The procedure involves removing the infected or damaged pulp (the soft tissue inside the tooth), cleaning and disinfecting the root canals, and then filling and sealing them to prevent further infection. It not only relieves pain but also restores function and prevents further dental complications.

If you experience symptoms like severe tooth pain, sensitivity to hot and cold, or gum swelling, consult a dentist to determine if a root canal is needed. A crown or filling is usually placed afterwards to restore the tooth’s strength and functionality.

The root canal procedure

1. Diagnosis and X-ray: The dentist examines the tooth and takes X-rays to assess the extent of the infection or damage.
2. Anaesthesia: Local anaesthesia is administered to numb the affected area, ensuring the patient’s comfort.
3. Pulp Removal: The dentist creates a small opening in the tooth to remove the infected or dead pulp tissue.
4. Cleaning and Shaping:  The root canals are thoroughly cleaned and shaped to prepare them for fillings.
5. Filling and Sealing: The canals are filled with a biocompatible material, such as gutta-percha, to prevent reinfection.
6. Restoration: A crown or permanent filling is placed to restore the tooth’s function and appearance.
